ternal engineering company

An engineering company is a company where the design of engineering-controlled products is managed. Changes to these products are also managed in the engineering company.

An internal engineering company is a company in your D365 FO environment.

In an engineering company, you control this data:

  • Products
  • Released products
  • BOMs and BOM versions
  • Routes and route versions
  • Engineering attributes
  • Documents that are attached to products

For each engineering-controlled product, the engineering company is defined in the applicable engineering product type.

From an engineering company, you release the products to logistical companies. You can use release control to make the product release specific for each logistical company. You set up release control for the applicable engineering product type.

External engineering company

You can also have an engineering company outside D365 FO and create and update the engineering products directly in the logistical companies. This is useful if you have an external database as the central product database where you maintain product data. In this scenario, no engineering company is required in D365 FO.

From an external engineering company, you can send product data directly to the logistical companies. Which data must be sent and which rules must be applied must be defined in the external engineering company.

You can implement a combination of both types of engineering companies.

Logistical company

A logistical company is a company to which engineering-controlled products are released from the engineering company. So, it is the target company for product release.

A logistical company is also the company where the logistical transactions are done, like purchase, production, sales.
