In Advanced project management, you can create a project quotation work breakdown structure with these task types:

  • Project
  • Standard
  • Summary
  • Detail

 Project

The root project line is used to define the main project settings. You can add project lines to the work breakdown structure to define the subprojects.

You can add project lines to lines of type Project.

If you transfer the project quotation to a project:

  • For the root project line of the work breakdown structure, a project is created.
  • For each other project line in the work breakdown structure, a sub-project is created.

 Standard

A standard line is a task that is used define the work to be done. You can also define the estimated costs and revenue that are required to do the task.

You can add tasks to lines of type Project and Standard.

Summary

A summary line is a task that is used if a task must be split internally but is communicated to the customer as one task. For example, a task can be too generic or too big with regards to the quantity or workload.

Some examples:

  • A tender from a customer has an activity for excavating with a total estimated quantity of 3000 cubic meter. Because you cannot excavate 3000 cubic meters at once, you split the task into five smaller tasks for 600 cubic meter each.
  • A tender from a customer has an activity for wiring on Main Street. Both sides of Main Street must be wired: Main street west and Main street east. As you do the wiring separately, you split the task into two tasks: Main Street west and Main street east.
  • A tender from a customer has an activity for painting with a total estimated quantity of 4000 square meter. This requires painting the base layer (4000 m2), use a heater for drying for two days, and to paint the final layer (4000 m2). You split the task into three detail tasks: base layer, drying, and final layer. Note the different scheduling unit for the drying tasks.

You can add summary lines to lines of type Project.

You can convert a standard task to a summary task. To do so, select the standard task and on the Action pane, on the Task tab, in the Maintain group, click Standard to summary. If you do so, the estimated costs and revenue lines of the task are deleted.

Detail

A detail line is a task that is used to define a part of the work to be done for a summary task. You can also define the estimated costs and revenue that are required to do the detail task. The detail tasks are used only internally for planning purposes. On a detail task, you can use a different scheduled unit than on the related summary task.

You can add detail lines to lines of type Summary and Detail. To do so, add a task to a summary line. The task type is automatically set to Detail and the detail task is indented to the summary task.
